Google Hangout Video: Buildings, Climate, and Our Energy Future

Existing buildings are responsible for 72 percent of U.S. electricity use. That's more energy than any individual country except China and the United States. We cannot transform our energy system and prevent runaway climate change if America’s commercial buildings continue to consume dirty fossil fuels at today’s rates.

Today David Allen, executive vice president of McKinstry and RMI Trustee, as well as RMI principal Victor Olgyay and manager Coreina Chan, had a discussion about:

  • How highly efficient buildings can help solve the urgent energy/climate challenges we face,
  • How transforming the building stock can improve the nation’s economy and the health of people living and working in those buildings,
  • and How you can help.

Watch the Hangout below (approximately 20 min) and stand with us to make this change in the world:

It's great hearing about RMI's focus on incremental improvement and then how they can take their individual projects and scale them up to make a greater positive impact.

I love hearing about RMI's projects. I also agree that we should start with the design of the buildings to make them more efficient.

Simple plan to cut government pollutions & costs for office space, equipment & supplies by 10's of billions of dollars

See http://whitecollargreenspace.blogspot.com/ for the next big thing in government - using tech to reduce the carbon footprint of governement buildings by 50%. .The Government could save $50 billion per year by having two shifts of white collar employees work each day. Office space costs $50,000/year for each employee yet we only use space 30% of time. We can no longer afford to have banker's hours for all. With over 2 million federal employees this cost-free paradigm change could avoid lay offs/furloughs and reduce pollution. We could use this to cut back on cost of office space instead of furloughs and shutdowns and large pay cuts. This simple paradigm shift solves three problems: It jumpstarts the economy and fights poverty, cuts pollution, reduces budget deficits.
