eLab One Year Recap

eLab has focused on building a platform for innovation where a diverse group of influential stakeholders can interact to create practical solutions for the greatest benefit of customers and society as a whole.

Key work products in the first year include:

  • A report, “New Business Models for the Distribution Edge,” detailing how existing electric utility business models are poorly adapted to tap the potential value of distributed resources and outlining principles that should guide the creation of new models .
  • A “meta-analysis” showing how increasing levels of distributed energy resources on the grid creates new challenges and opportunities, leading to little ability to make tradeoffs between investments on either side of the distribution edge.
  • Through e-Lab’s “Innovation Beacon” workstream, a focused deep dive to develop new ideas and approaches that will allow Fort Collins Utilities to achieve its aspirations to create a zero energy district in Fort Collins. Learn more

There is an excellent film out called "Terra Blight" about the generation of e-waste: http://www.terrablight.com.

John,

Thanks for pointing us to the Terra Blight film. E-waste certainly is a concern. You may be interested in the work of Jenny Magnes at Vassar (http://vq.vassar.edu/issues/2012/02/pushing-boundaries/looking-through-natures-lens.html), among many others, exploring organic optics and other organic computing/technology materials that may eventually result in technologies that can be composted rather than dumped in a landfill or treated as hazardous waste.

Cheers,
Pete
